The Stoic Cop

There’s no doubt that law enforcement comes with its immense stress.  Sometimes it feels like our world is nothing but chaos; chaos at home due to stressors at work, chaos at work due to the stressors at home, but mainly the chaos we make for ourselves from unnecessary, falsely perceived stress. But what if you could control all that by simply adopting the virtues of the stoic philosophy? Stoicism teaches how to find inner peace amid the chaos of our perceived external world.  With a mixture of stoic aphorisms and personal stories, The Stoic Cop explains how it is possible to  handle the daily stress and chaos of law enforcement with a little mind control.  Learn to bridge the gap between police and citizen relationships, deal with difficult people, navigate department politics, and more. Learn to control your perceptions, opinions, and emotions and become a better, more virtuous police officer. Most importantly, control your perceived chaos.

A fantastic book that is one of a few that should be given to recruits and new hires ("I Love a Cop" by Kirschman, "Verbal Judo" by Geroge Thompson, and "Emotional Survival" by Dr. Gilmartin being three others). It's the right mindset at the right time. (How we got here is another story.) – Reviewed by Chris Morgan via Amazon

I’m a believer in the law of attraction, what you put out there is what you will get back. Mindset is everything. Author Bill Mauro’s book takes that much deeper with his passion for the principles of Stoicism and how it can and should be applied to those who are in the law enforcement profession. He talks about discipline, vigilance, humility, and tranquility but breaks them down even deeper. Mauro is a law enforcement officer and the examples he provides are great learning tools on how to apply stoicism to everyday situations when dealing with the community and coworkers and to de-escalation. If you are thinking about a career in law enforcement, just beginning one or have been on the job for a while, I believe this book would be an excellent addition to your reading material. It's easy to blame others but it all starts with taking a look at yourself and how you might be and do better. – Reviewed by Donna Brown via Amazon

This book is a must read for anyone in law enforcement. From the newly graduated rookie to the senior officer. The thoughts and teachings that are in this book strike home all too well. This book definitely gives you a “gut check” and opens your eyes in all areas. You definitely won’t be disappointed reading this, I got it same day and finished it. To my fellow brother and sisters out there stay safe and remember, we all go home. – Reviewed by Frank via Amazon

In today’s one-sided reporting against law-enforcement, this book enlightens the reader on what an officer on the front-line deals with. A must read for anyone who is even slightly critical of law-enforcement in today’s climate. – Reviewed by Guardian Angel via Amazon

This is a great book, and I really took a lot away from it. The one negative aspect is that there are a lot of typos, which takes away a little of its credibility. If not for those, it would be top-notch. This should have certainly been caught in editing. Overall, great job Bill Mauro! – Reviewed by K Mac via Amazon

I’ve been in law enforcement for the last 17 years, and a practicing Stoic for the last five. I was super excited to see that someone finally wrote a book about Stoicism focused on the law enforcement professional. After finishing the book, I believe Mauro did a great job putting it together in a way that does justice to Stoicism and being practical and relevant for the LEO. He does a great job knocking down that old common misunderstanding of Stoic philosophy… that we should be unfeeling like a robot: emotionally cold and sterile; but rather disciplined in every aspect of our lives, for the benefit of ourselves, our families, and the people we serve. Stoicism is about achieving human excellence, or at least staying so focused on the project that we may one day achieve the best version of ourselves. For the LEO, this is part of our oath of office and commitment to the profession and to our partners. I highly recommend this book to every LEO that believes that excellence of character matters, that part of being a good cop is being a good human being and is looking for more inspirational material to draw from. I also recommend it to that LEO who is hitting that “low point” in their career, where the stresses of the job are beginning to take their toll on their mental and emotional wellbeing. The job doesn’t have to destroy you as a person… there are resources… and this is a good place to start. – Reviewed by Epictater via Amazon

I am not in law enforcement, but family members are and are retired LEO’s and I wanted to learn more about stoicism. And I found great perspective from this book and many lessons I can carry into my personal life and my profession. I do think the book was written well and the message was delivered without any political influence which is tough to do in today’s climate. The book was not anti or pro anything except encourages betterment of oneself for the sake of a better way of life which I admired. Great read for anyone but I imagine being more relatable for someone in Law Enforcement, but I recommend this read to anyone! – Reviewed by Nick J M via Amazon

Fantastic read. It’s important to appreciate the context and substance to which it was written. It answers tough questions and puts the burden of responsibility back to the individual officer in regard to fixing what is wrong with modern policing. Again, this is not a manual, simply a philosophy on applying the age-old concept of stoicism to modern law enforcement. Worth your time. – Reviewed by John G via Amazon

I’ve been a police officer for nearly 20 years and this book was useful and relevant. The author provides personal examples and shares rather private experiences. Anyone who’s been a cop for even a short period of time will know for a fact the author really is a cop. Since the book was written by a cop the text was easy to read and not overly complicated. I finished it in one sitting at around 1-1/2 hours. If you are going through a tough patch at your particular Department, I can recommend this book as good insight into a philosophy that may help. A lot of the material is information familiar to most seasoned officers, but I picked up a few things despite a couple decades on the job. It’s quick enough reading that I could see it being part of an FTO program perhaps. – Reviewed by Kenneth via Amazon

Websters defines stoic as one who suffers without complaint. To me it means "get the job done and be quiet." Mauro teaches cops and future cops how to avoid the stress and chaos of the job and still be able to function as a cop and as a citizen. Filled with quotes from Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius Meditations, this book leads us toward a path of control and reflection. Along the path are examples from Mauro's own life when he used his philosophy. Read this if you feel your life is out of control or if someone near to you needs help controlling their life. If you feel you need improvement and don’t, we all then this is the book for you. – Reviewed by Janet
